Embodying its core value of social responsibility, University of Antique, through the initiative of College of Business and Accountancy and Extension Unit, started an extension project entitled, “Nurturing Communities: BAMBOO WEAVERS (BAMBOO Weaving Economic Advancement, Vitality, and Entrepreneurship for Resilience and Sustainability)” at Brgy. Carawisan 1, San Remigio, Antique.

The extension project led by Prof. Irish Macuja together with Prof. Diadem Pearl Aduana, Prof. Edbert Cabrillos, and Prof. John Russel Perez aims to empower bamboo processors with essential knowledge and skills to mitigate the threat of bamboo termites and other causes of bamboo decay due to climate change.

On a lecture conducted at UA last May 11, at UA Main Campus, the Bamboo Processors were trained and engaged in bamboo weaving and cutting utilizing new technology with Mr. Reynaldo Mistio, IGP Manager of Bamboo Production Center as Resource Speaker. Also present during the lecture was Dr. Nelly E. Mistio, Vice-president for Administration and Finance.

UA gives importance to bamboo as a versatile bio-resource, widely considered a worthy substitute for expensive products like iron, plastics, cement, and an essential element in meeting livelihood requirements.
This project is primarily anchored on the following Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs): #5: Gender Equality, and #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
