
English Teachers from University of Antique, Department of Education (DepEd) schools in the province, and participants from other provinces in Western Visayas gathered at Paghi-UsA Hall of the Main Campus, today, November 18, 2024, for the Training Session on Teaching English in Multilingual Settings with speakers from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).
Prof. Marvin Casalan, Director of Instructional Materials Development Unit and the organizer of the said event, highlighted that the session will be a venue where teachers can explore how they can create inclusive, dynamic, and supportive learning environment that harnesses the language diversity and promotes academic success and language acquisition of their learners.
Imparting knowledge to the participants about English-medium Instructions, Thoughtful Translanguaging, Pedagogical Translanguaging, and Generative AI and Human Writing are the speakers from ADMU namely, Dr. Kingsley Bolton, Professor Emeritus of University of Stockholm and Research Fellow at ADMU, Dr. Isabel Pefianco Martin, Professor, Dr. Marianne Rachel G. Perfecto, Associate Professor, and Dr. Priscilla Angela T. Cruz, Associate Professor.
Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr., University President, stated that when teachers have to make a difference, they should make sure that their classrooms, schools, and university are real and inclusive despite the different barriers posed by the various language backgrounds of students.
“The real measure in our training session is that when we go back to our respective classrooms, there are changes, though how small it is, that we would implement into our classrooms,” he further stated.
Also present during the session were the students from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) and AB English students from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
